10 Tips and Tricks for Supporting Your Student with Hearing Loss

Elementary

1. Morning listening check    

2. Remember to turn on and mute the FM    

3. Face the student while talking    

4. Don’t stand in front of windows    

5. Check for understanding! Use signal.

6. Repeat directions & student responses    

7. Minimize outside noise    

8. Give extra wait time    

9. Use visuals (ex. write important info on the board)    

10. Always caption videos!    

Middle & Secondary

1. Remember to turn on and mute the DM system when necessary

2. Face the student while talking

3. Avoid standing in front of windows

4. Repeat directions & student responses

5. Minimize background noise

6. Give extra wait time

7. Use visuals (ex. write important info on the board)

8. Use closed captions on videos

9. Avoid giving important information during transition times

10. Remember to email me with important vocabulary or about upcoming tests
