My name is Kevin Scharlau and I am the Acting Principal at Highland Elementary. I have been in education since 2008, and began as an administrator in 2022. I taught kindergarten for 9 years, first grade for 3 years, third grade for a year and served as an Instructional Specialist for a year. I have my Bachelors in Elementary Education, a Masters in Literacy Education and completed my Educational Leadership coursework all at Penn State Harrisburg. I was the Co-director of the Capital Area Writing Project and have been an adjunct professor both at Penn State Harrisburg. My beliefs in education center around Voice and Choice. I love teaching writing and bring enthusiasm to everything I do!
I am a Red Land High School graduate. My wife and I have two children, PJ and Chloe! We have three cats and are HUGE Penn State Football fan! We love Harry Potter, all types of board games and Escape Rooms. During the summer we love spending time at the lake, at my parents’ house.
My goal is to ensure every student feels welcome at Highland. I will be engaged with an enthusiastic energy, bright smile and do everything to empower the students at Highland to be all they can be!
