What is ExCEL?

ExCEL Virtual Learning Academy is powered by CAOLA, the Capital Area Online Learning Association, which provides full- and part-time online learning options for students across the region.

CAOLA is a partnership between the Capital Area Intermediate Unit and its member school districts, created to offer flexible, high-quality online learning opportunities. Its web-based courses are designed using proven online instructional practices and next-generation educational software to support student success.

What makes ExCEL truly unique is that our students learn through West Shore School District teachers whenever possible. This keeps instruction local, personal, and aligned with the same standards, care, and community connection found in our District’s classrooms.

Students Find Success When…
  • they enjoy taking ownership of their learning.
  • they ask questions and actively engage with their teachers.
  • they communicate regularly with parents/guardians about their progress, grades, minutes, and course information.
  • they stay connected to the district by participating in clubs, sports, and district-sponsored events.

Who Is a Good Fit for ExCEL?

ExCEL is a strong match for students who:
  • prefer a flexible schedule and want more control over when and how they complete their work.
  • are comfortable working independently and staying motivated without constant in-person supervision.
  • communicate regularly with teachers and reach out when they need help or clarification.
  • thrive in a quieter, self-paced learning environment.
  • enjoy using online tools, multimedia lessons, and digital coursework.
  • want to remain connected to their home school while learning from home.
ExCEL is especially helpful for students who benefit from working at their own pace — whether they want to get ahead, recover credits, or simply learn in an environment that fits their individual needs.

When Is the Best Time for My Student to Join?

Students tend to be most successful when they join ExCEL during natural transition points in the school year.
The ideal time to begin is at the very start of the school year, when routines, expectations, and pacing are first being established.

This sounds like a great fit for my student!
