COVID-19 Quarantine Time Periods & Verification Forms

Quarantine Time Period Update

On December 4, 2020, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH) released new recommendations related to quarantine. Previously, the guidance was for individuals in direct contact with a COVID-19 positive person to be quarantined for 14 days from last exposure. Specifically, the CDC and DOH now provide that:

  • Quarantine of close contacts can end after Day 10 of quarantine, without testing, if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring. However, it is recommended that symptom monitoring continue until day 14; and

  • Quarantine of close contacts can end after Day 7 following a negative test. Testing may not occur before Day 5 of quarantine and the individual may not have had any symptoms during daily monitoring. It is recommended that symptom monitoring continue until day 14.

  • Individuals who are living with a COVID-19 positive person will be required to quarantine for 10 days following the positive individual’s isolation period. In other words, the quarantine period for an exposed individual living with someone who is positive will range from 17 to 24 days or longer.

On January 7, 2021, PA DOH revised their recommendations and are now stating, “While in some cases of COVID-19 shorter quarantines might be appropriate, for contacts of cases infected with B.1.1.7, a full 14-day quarantine is required." As a result, any close contact that is unable to prove the strain type of the positive case, or was a close contact to the B.1.1.7 strain, will be required to quarantine for the full 14 days.

We will continue to assign 14 days of quarantine for students and staff identified as close contacts, we will allow shortened quarantine periods, consistent with the updated guidance.

Although periods of quarantine may be reduced, the CDC and PA DOH recommend individuals who have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive individual monitor their symptoms for the full 14 days after their last exposure. The CDC’s website provides a complete listing of COVID-19 symptoms and a self-checker.

If you would like to request a shortened quarantine, complete and submit the appropriate verification form prior to returning to school or work. Student forms may be found below.  Parents should submit completed forms to their school nurse.  Staff forms may be obtained from the Director of Human Resources and should be submitted to HR.
