January Update

Hello Red Mill Families!
Welcome (almost) to January and 2022! We sincerely wish that everyone is enjoying their holiday break. The past few weeks have proven to be fun and enjoyable here at Red Mill. Our classrooms participated in a door decorating contest and 2nd grade celebrated Polar Express Day! Mr. Wensel was transformed into an ice cream sundae and Mini-THON plans are officially underway. Our specialists put together a holiday video (sent out via Seesaw) and we celebrated another Masked Reader event. A special thank you to our PTO who continue to shine! We appreciate your leadership and commitment to our students, staff and school community.

Character education is an important part of our positive behavior approach at Red Mill. This spring, we are going to be utilizing a character education program called Core Essentials. Each month, we will focus on a new BIG IDEA.
Here are the BIG ideas for the spring of 2022….
JAN     SELF-CONTROL       Choosing to do what you should do even when you don’t want to.
FEB     COMPASSION           Caring enough to do something about someone else’s need
MAR    COOPERATION        Working together to do more than you can do alone.
APR    HOPE                          Believing that something good can come out of something bad.
MAY    PERSEVERANCE     Refusing to give up when life gets hard.
The BIG idea will be taught and reinforced all across the building. Each week, our classroom teachers will show a focus video and lead a class discussion. There will be a daily message embedded into our channel 9 announcements every day. Students will also be moving and grooving to the monthly music video.  
Throughout the month, we’ll follow this progression with each BIG idea. 
SAY IT: Each month, the first goal is for students to be able to simply say the Big Idea value word and the accompanying definition (or description).
KNOW IT: The second step each month is for the students to be able to describe the Big Idea value word and definition in their own words. This goal moves students further toward application of the value, as they are able to think critically about what it means in their lives.
SEE IT: The third goal is for students to look for this Big Idea in the world around them. This could mean finding examples in books, in nature, in their peers, or in influential adults. Recognizing the value in others as it happens moves students even closer to the final goal.
BE IT: As students learn more and more about the Big Idea each month, the final step is to give
them opportunities to live out the value in their own lives.
We are very excited to begin using this awesome resource as we continue to equip our students in showing Red Mill PRIDE by being SAFE, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE.

Our office will be closed on 12/30 and 12/31. We will then return on January 3 with normal operating hours.
