Online Learning

ExCEL (Expanded Choices for e-Learners) Virtual Learning Academy is a learning option designed to meet the dynamic needs of students who are finding success learning online in a non-traditional setting. 

ExCEL offers both full-time and blended virtual learning options with flexible pacing and on-site supports to help each student achieve ExCELlence in school and after graduation.
 
Family Support
Virtual and in person learning opportunities for families are available to assist them in using software (Schoology, Seesaw, etc.), navigating available resources, helping your child with organization and time management, helping to set-up home work spaces, etc. Regularly scheduled family Zoom sessions are also available.

Eligibility
All students in grades 1-12 who currently reside in the West Shore School District are eligible to attend, including those students who are currently attending an outside cyber, charter, or private school. English Learners and students with IEPs will meet with school staff to assess their needs and ability to thrive in a virtual learning setting. 
  
ExCEL Teacher Monitors
ExCEL monitors understand that virtual learning is different and will adapt their practices to meet the needs of students. ExCEL monitors and staff members are available for one-on-one, small group, and office hour appointments during the school day, as well as after school hours as needed.

What Makes ExCEL Unique?

ExCEL Virtual Learning Academy, Powered by the Capital Area Online Learning Association (CAOLA) offers quality asynchronous online learning for students in grades 1-12. 

ExCEL students have access to a support network of West Shore School District teacher monitors, counselors, career coordinators, psychologists, literacy specialists, technology specialists, advisors, and administrators ready to 
provide assistance. They also have access to the District’s special education, gifted, and social 
work services.

Our ExCEL students each receive a District-issued device and access to online, phone, and in person technology support. Additionally, face-to-face support is provided when needed by District staff.

Grades 1-5
Students in grades 1-5 have the option to participate in specials in their home school. Additionally, students in grades 4 and 5 may participate in band and/or orchestra and grade 5 students may participate in chorus. 

Grades 6-12
For students in grades 6-12, the option is available to take all courses virtually or to take a blending of virtual learning courses and traditional face-to-face courses in their home school. 

Interested high school students also have the option to enroll in programs offered by the Cumberland Perry Area Career & Technical Center.
