Elementary Teacher Assignments
At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11, the PowerSchool portal will reopen for elementary parents. At that time, class and schedule information for all students will be available in PowerSchool. That is also when kindergarten families will learn their assignment to morning or afternoon kindergarten. In addition, on Tuesday, August 11, an email will be sent to parents of students in kindergarten through fifth grade with teacher assignment information. Please check your spam/junk mail folders if you do not see this message in your inbox. Bus information will be emailed to parents prior to Phase 2.  

Devices and School Supply Pick Up
We have designated Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18 for device and materials pick-up. Principals will send out the pick-up schedule for their building on August 7 along with information about obtaining these materials if unable to join us on August 17 or 18.

During pick up, all necessary materials and supplies for learning in the elementary classroom will be provided by the District. This will include a District issued iPad for grades K-2 and Chromebook for grades 3-5. We understand parents often want to supplement those materials, and if they choose to, are welcome to purchase additional items for their students (designer folders, pencil cases, etc.). 
 
Back to School, New Family, and Kindergarten Orientations
In person events will not be held; however, virtual events will be scheduled for students and their families. More information will be shared by schools as plans are finalized. 

Elementary Schedule

We are thankful for our staff and families who are working hard to support students in these very difficult times. As we move into Distance Learning 2.0, we are pleased to share the following sample schedules.
 
Student schedules have been developed with the aid of our parent, student, and staff survey results and are designed to provide flexibility for our students and their families. For this reason, most instructions and assignments will be developed so that they can be easily accessed at different times by students. This allows students, families, and teachers to work flexibly while addressing the different demands on their time and availability caused by the current situation. However, teachers will be scheduling time to connect with their students in real-time. 
Sample Elementary Schedules
To help parents and students navigate Distance Learning, teachers will provide weekly learning plans which outline learning for the week.  At the elementary level, Seesaw and PowerSchool will be the primary platform for lessons, learning, and communication.  Teachers will receive additional training in use of these platforms to better organize information and assignments for students and parents.

Our goal during Distance Learning 2.0 will be to mirror, to the best of our ability, a regular school day. 
 
Kindergarten families will be assigned to morning/afternoon small group sessions with their teacher to begin the school year. Students will transition to a more structured learning schedule on Thursday, August 27th which includes Reading instruction, Math instruction and specials.

Grades 1-5:  5 hours per day
Our goal during Distance Learning 2.0 will be to mirror, to the best of our ability, a regular school day.

*Fifth Grade Chorus will not be offered in Phase 1.

Please Note: Teachers will be working a regular schedule with professional development, meetings, and planning time outside the student schedule.
 
We understand that there may be unique challenges for students with disabilities and that this may be a stressful time for our families. Throughout the closure, your child’s special education team will work to provide access to the distance learning framework while supporting IEP goals and objectives. Live and Recorded Lessons

Teachers will utilize Zoom to hold live lessons each day. If a student is not able to attend the live session, the mini-lesson that teaches the skill will be recorded and posted. Additionally, Zoom will be used to schedule break-out rooms for collaboration, small group instruction, interventions, one-on-one testing, etc. Speech and other related services will be scheduled into a student’s day. 
 
Students will be learning new concepts and skills. Parents, it is important to let your child’s teachers know of special circumstances so you and they can work together and plan accordingly.

Attendance and Grading

Attendance
Unlike in the spring, PDE is requiring all school districts meet a 180 day requirement and instuctional minute requirements based on grade level.  As a result, attendance will be taken during the first period of the day and will follow the same process as if the students were in school. Attendance will also be taken at each period. If your child is ill, please call the school to report an absence. We are in the process of creating a system that will allow you to submit excuses online.  More details to come.
 
Please Note: We understand that due to family circumstances the Distance Learning 2.0 student schedule will not be a perfect fit for all families. Parents and teachers will be working closely together to ensure that those students with working parents are also engaged. Once your children's schedules are received, look for communication from their teachers and be sure to share the challenges you will be facing in regards to attendance so we can work together. 
 
Grading 
Recognizing that families are experiencing the current situation in different ways, teachers have been asked to provide a great deal of flexibility in grading. With that said, grading will mirror traditional grading practices, as if students were in school. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher(s) to discuss concerns.  Grades will be posted in PowerSchool.
social emotional learning logo Our student's mental health is of high concern. District administration and school counselors are working collectively to determine a path forward for navigating mental health challenges among students and staff, as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic. Counseling groups will be scheduled as well as regular check-ins with students. If you have concerns about your student, please do not hesitate to contact your child's counselor.

POWERSCHOOL
PowerSchool is the West Shore School District’s online portal for all student information, including report cards, test scores, absences/tardies. PowerSchool is utilized district-wide and updated in real time. Communication preferences can also be set through PowerSchool’s Contact Manager. In this system, parents can review contact information (changes must be made by contacting your child’s school) and opt to receive texts, email messages and phone calls about emergency situations, closings/delays and general information. 

During the closure, please use the Contact Us page if you need help obtaining a PowerSchool account.
SEESAW
Seesaw is a portfolio journal designed to house all of your child’s work in one place. The short 3-minute video linked to below will explain more about Seesaw. Many elementary school staff are using Seesaw to connect with students and their families. If you have difficulty logging into Seesaw, please contact your child's teacher. 
CLEVER
The following resources are available to our students through our Clever login: Benchmark Education, ExactPath (Edmentum Courseware), Study Island, Everfi, Science Fusion, Journeys, Collections, ReadingEggs, MathSeeds, and Seesaw. Students should log in with their Google account ([email protected]). If you have difficulty logging into Clever, please contact your child's teacher.

  • Clever iOS App - Students with Clever Badges (typically K-2) can use the Clever App. Sorry no Android App at this time.
ZOOM
Zoom is an video conferencing program used by teachers to connect with students and parents virtually. A Zoom account is not needed to partipate in a meeting.
