Enhancing School Security Update from the Superintendent

Message sent on November 10, 2022

Good afternoon West Shore students, families, and staff,

Since my update in August which outlined steps being taken this school year to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community, progress has been made toward enhancing school security in our middle and high schools.

In September, the School Board approved an agreement with Fairview and Lower Allen Townships to add a School Resource Officer to each high school. Based on the time requirements to hire and train these positions, we anticipate they will start in the District no later than the beginning of next school year.

Most recently, last month, we hired three School Security Guards and over the last two weeks they have been busy preparing for their new roles. In addition to emergency response training which included First Aid, CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed, Safe Crisis Management, Firearms and Active Shooter preparedness, our School Security Guards also successfully completed the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) training course. This course built on their prior law enforcement and security experience, and provided them with information on safety issues relevant to school-age children, and skills to create and maintain positive and influential relationships with our diverse student body.

Please join me in welcoming these individuals to our schools.

  • Edward Pague - Mr. Pague is looking forward to getting to know the school community at Cedar Cliff High School. He is a graduate of the Harrisburg Area Community College Municipal Police Academy and a former police officer with the Northern York County Regional Police Department. Prior to working for West Shore, Mr. Pague was a Protection Officer providing courtroom security in Lancaster County.

  • Brian Rodgers - Mr. Rodgers is a retired police officer from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police who is looking forward to joining the staff at Red Land High School. He graduated from the City of Pittsburgh Police Training Academy and most recently served as a Police Corporal at UPMC Harrisburg.

  • Daniel Miller - Mr. Miller is a graduate of Montgomery County Police Academy and received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Bucks County Community College. Mr. Miller has 19 years of experience as a security officer, most recently working at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, and is looking forward to joining the team at New Cumberland Middle School.

You can anticipate seeing Mr. Pague, Mr. Rodgers, and Mr. Miller on duty beginning on Monday, November 14. While each have been assigned to a particular school building, they may be called to provide assistance at any of our facilities.

We are still in the process of hiring two additional School Security Guards to join the staff at Crossroads and Allen Middle Schools. If you or someone you know is qualified and interested making a positive difference in our schools, please visit the employment section of our website for details about our School Security Guard vacancies.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our efforts to keep our school community safe. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Veterans and their families in recognition of Veterans Day. We are extremely grateful for your service and sacrifice…thank you.

Sincerely,

Todd B. Stoltz, Ed.D.
Superintendent
