Mrs. van Hemert

Welcome to my classroom website!

My name is Ann van Hemert and this will be my third year as the Autism Support teacher. I hope you are excited about this coming year! If you have any questions, please contact me via the school phone number or email at Please be patient when sending messages, I am not at my computer very much during the day when I am teaching your children. If you need to reach us in a hurry, calling the school phone may be the fastest way.  We will sending home planners and folders every day. You may put notes for me or other school personnel in the planner or folder. Please check your child's backpack for important information.

I am connected on the Remind app and have found that it is very helpful for quick communication about your child. Try messaging me! If you are not connected, I will be opening a new Remind group for the 18-19 school year and will be sending information home about how to connect.

We will be using SeeSaw more this year and many of the regular education teachers are using SeeSaw. SeeSaw is an online communication platform for sharing photos, videos and work that we are doing in school. I will be sending information about SeeSaw.

I hope to add some new information and resources, but would appreciate any suggestions along the way. If you think of any content that would be helpful to you let me know.

Below you will see some links for games and songs we have enjoyed in class. On the resources page are links that will help you navigate the world of Special Education. My goal is to make the website not just a tool for me, as the teacher, to share information with parents, but also a learning tool and resource.

Please read to and with your child!

Practice counting and identifying numbers

Talk about letters, letter sounds and how sounds go together to form words

Think about rhyming words

Notice and create patterns

Make something! Practice cutting and gluing

Practice letter formation, writing and drawing

Keep work pleasant and fun

Practice self-care routines

(That is a lot! Take a break and relax!)

Individualized student homework may be sent home. Please contact me with any questions. It should be "just right" for your child, not too easy and not too difficult.

For some of my students we are ready to send home sight words and at home reading.

In this section you will find information on Special Education. Here is a list of terms used in Special Education and explanations. The other is the Autism Initiative Handbook that will help you understand the ins and out of the Verbal Behavior program that we will be doing in our classroom. Here is a shorter explanation of Applied Behavior Analysis for parents. Later I would like to add learning resources for you to use at home!

My Back to School Powerpoint with important information! Please see if you did not make it to Back to School Nights.

Coming Soon!

We will be swimming already! Letters will be coming to you about swimming. We travel by bus during the school day and on the final day, parents are able to come and see us swim. It will be September 5 through 11.
Mrs. Romberger will be sharing her book order forms with us again. Look for these soon.
Conferences will be coming up in November. If you are able to plan that far ahead, contact me for available dates. We are able to be flexible if you are not able to come during the school day.
