Spelling/Word Work


Students will be assigned a spelling pattern each week and work with words that contain the pattern for 5 days.

Day 1: 
In whole group, students receive mini-lesson on spelling pattern and then, in centers students manipulate words containing the spelling pattern as well as complete a worksheet.  

Day 2 & 3:
In centers, students continue to manipulate words containing the spelling pattern and complete a worksheet.

Day 4: 
In centers, students will read a one-page passage looking for words that contain the week's spelling pattern.  The students will then select 5-10 words and formulate sentences, using the correct meaning of the word.

Day 5: 
In whole group, students will take a quiz.  The quiz has a word bank of 10 words and the students are expected to know the spelling pattern and be able to classify the words based on the pattern.  Then, students will be given 10 words that they will have seen in the past week that contain the spelling pattern and will be expected to spell them as the teacher gives them.  (see below for potential spelling words for each unit)
