On Monday, June 5th, the District participated in a professional development opportunity that  included the documentary Resilience. The screening and activities served to bring together many of the topics and programs we have been discussing over the past few years: Safe Crisis Management, Student Assistance Programs, Suicide Prevention, Substance Abuse, Mental Health Issues, Family Dysfunction, Growth Mindset, Resilience, Grit, and Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs.

ACEs was a significant study done in 1992 in the medical field. Adverse Childhood Experiences have been linked to

  • risky health behaviors,
  • chronic health conditions,
  • low life potential, and
  • early death.

As the number of ACEs increases, so does the risk for these outcomes. CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, states that the wide-ranging health and social consequences of ACEs underscore the importance of preventing them before they happen. CDC promotes lifelong health and well-being achieved through assuring safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for all children. Everyone in the West Shore School District is committed to providing safe and nurturing environments for our students.
