Register Now for our Online Summer Driver Education Course

This summer, the West Shore School District is excited to offer our online Driver’s Education theory course to students who wish to prepare in advance of getting their driver’s permit or those seeking to complete the course prior to starting their full course load next year.

About the Course
Similar to an in-person driver education theory course, our online class is designed specifically to teach students to be safe, responsible, and competent drivers. During the approximately 30 hours of online instruction, students will learn skills they can immediately put into practice behind the wheel including:

  • Vehicle basics - dashboard controls, pedals and mirrors, and basic automobile maintenance
  • Rules of the road - signs, signals, merging, turning, and parking
  • Safe driving in different weather conditions
  • Differences between city, country, and highway traffic
  • Dangers of distracted driving - minimizing in-car distractions
  • Effects of drugs and alcohol on driving

Whether taken over the summer or during the school year, students will complete the same material on their own time, at their own pace, and outside of school through Schoology. Our Driver Education teachers Mr. Robinson and Mr. Weaver, will be monitoring student progress and available to assist your child as needed throughout the course. Work completed will be graded, with students who successfully complete the class earning 0.25 credit.

Students who would prefer to take the course during the school year, will be enrolled in the class as part of their daily schedule and will be assigned to either semester one or semester two based upon their date of birth, with oldest students taking the course first.

Timeline for Summer Course
All assignments must be completed and turned in by August 5, 2020.  Students may complete the course material at their own pace within that time frame.

Cost & Payment Options
There is no cost to take the course during the school year; however, there is a $95 cost to enroll in the Summer Program for Driver Education.

Payments will be collected online via the K12PaymentCenter website. This is the same payment system utilized for the District's school lunch program. K12PaymentCenter.com provides parents with the following two options for summer program payments:

  • E-Check payment - electronic checks include a convenience fee of $0.95
  • Credit Card payment - credit card payments include a convenience fee of $1.95 (for payments up to and including $95). Please note, the West Shore School District does not receive any of these convenience fees.

Families using K12PaymentCenter.com who already have an account for their child's school meals, will see the Driver Education Summer Program fee listed under the "School Fees" tab on the left. Click the “Available Fees” drop down and simply add the fee to your cart to process.

Families who have not used K12Payment Center in the past will need a valid email address and the student’s identification number to make their payment.  You can find your West Shore student's ten digit identification number by logging into PowerSchool online (the number is not available in the mobile app). Each student's number appears immediately after the student's middle name across the top of the screen.  After creating your K12Payment center account and logging in, you will see the Driver Education Summer Program fee listed under the "School Fees" tab on the left. Click the “Available Fees” drop down and simply add the fee to your cart to process.

Families who prefer to pay the program fee by check should submit their check, made payable to West Shore School District, to:

West Shore School District
Attn: Driver Education Summer Program
507 Fishing Creek Road, P.O. Box 803
New Cumberland, PA 17070

If you have any questions regarding the payment process, please email Kim McDermitt at [email protected]
