Student Email Accounts for Grades 6-12

Effective November 7, 2018, students in middle and high school (grades 6-12) will have access to a West Shore School District email address. This email account can be utilized at school and from home by logging in at https://mail.google.com.

Our goal in providing student email, is to increase communication and collaboration for students and staff members. For example our learning management system, Schoology, has the ability to send reminders about assignments and class announcements via email. In addition, students will have the ability to receive notifications about files added to their Google Drive which were shared with them by fellow students and teachers. Teachers will also be able to communicate directly with students and vice versa.

Grades 6-8
During the first few weeks of school, middle school students received training on email composition and etiquette. At the middle school level, email access will be limited to student to student, student to staff, and student to an approved list. Because emails will be blocked from outside the District, and by all individuals not on the approved list, students should not receive spam or unsolicited messages. In addition, middle school students will not be able to send messages to accounts outside the District or to those not on the approved list.

Grades 9-12
At the high school level, students will be able to email student to student, student to staff, and individuals outside the District without restrictions. The open lines of communications for high school students is to accommodate their need to communicate with colleges, universities, trade schools, and internship sponsors.

Grades 6-12
All middle and high school student to student emails will be archived for one school year (July 1-June 30). All student to District staff emails will be archived for two years from the date they are sent.

Parents
Middle and high school parents can access their student’s email account and view their sent and received messages. Each student’s username and password is available in PowerSchool. Click on the “@ Student Email” in the left-hand navigation bar to view. Please note, you will need to log into PowerSchool using a website browser, the information is not accessible in the PowerSchool mobile app.

We are excited to offer this educational tool that will open up many opportunities for our students and staff.  If you have any questions, please contact Steve Vogelsong, Coordinator of Technology & Media Services at [email protected][email protected]
