SCHOOL CLOSURE: New Cumberland Middle School – November 6-15, 2020 (minimally)

November 5, 2020

Good afternoon New Cumberland Families,

Today, we learned another member of the New Cumberland Middle School community is presumed positive for COVID-19. Due to multiple factors, including continued community spread, the number of positive cases affecting our school community, the number of students and staff required to quarantine as a result of those cases, and PA DOH and PDE guidance, New Cumberland Middle School will close for all students and staff effective Friday, November 6 through minimally Sunday, November 15, 2020.

During the closure, we will return to Distance Learning 2.0 and students will follow the class schedule they have been utilizing on Fridays. Over the course of next week, we will continue to monitor conditions to determine our ability to return safely to in-person instruction on Monday, November 16. All other District schools will remain open at this time.

What happens now:

  • New Cumberland students will complete their coursework from home via Distance Learning 2.0 minimally through Sunday, November 15. Students will follow the same schedule they have been using on Fridays.
  • Over the course of next week, we will continue to monitor conditions to determine our ability to return safely to in-person instruction on Monday, November 16.
  • Classrooms and any affected areas will undergo any additional required sanitation and cleaning in accordance with CDC, PDE, and PA DOH guidance.
  • Individuals who tested positive and those identified as close contacts will be quarantined as per PA DOH guidance and may participate in Distance Learning 2.0 if they are feeling well enough to do so.

What you can do:

  • Follow CDC guidelines on protecting yourself and others, practice social distancing, wear face coverings, wash your hands regularly, and avoid gatherings.
  • Closely monitor your child for possible symptoms for the next 2 to 14 days. The CDC’s website provides a complete listing of symptoms and a self-checker: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html
  • If anyone in your household begins to exhibit symptoms, seek medical attention from a health-care provider and notify the school.

As we have said since we reopened this school year, our goal is not only to open, but to remain open. Our decision to close the building was not made lightly but we feel is in the best interest of the health and safety of our school community.

Please don’t hesitate to email us directly or call the school if you would like to discuss any concerns you have regarding this information.

Sincerely,

Todd Stoltz, Superintendent
