Message to Current West Shore Students and Their Families

students
March 18, 2021

Good evening West Shore families,

As we continue planning for the 2021-2022 school year, it is our intent to follow a traditional schedule with students at all grade levels learning in person, five days a week. However, throughout this school year, we heard from families who are interested in a choice for on-line and blended learning. Based on this feedback and a desire to offer expanded learning options, we are excited to introduce a virtual learning academy to meet the needs of students and families who are seeking an alternative to the traditional in person school experience.

The Expanded Choices for e-Learners (ExCEL) Virtual Learning Academy will provide flexibility in the learning environment and will allow for a more diverse offering of courses for our students, including those in kindergarten through senior year of high school. The design of the Academy was based on feedback from students, parents, teachers, administration, and our experiences from this year.

As you will note by reviewing the information below, ExCEL will offer an enhanced experience from Distance Learning 2.0, including access to onsite programs and offerings like music lessons, swimming in second and fourth grade, boating in sixth grade, etc. To learn more about what makes ExCEL unique, view sample schedules, and determine if it is right for your child, please visit:

As you can imagine, creating schedules that meet the different course needs of in-person and online students is very complex, and we want to be able to fulfill the requests of all students to the greatest extent possible while allowing our teachers to prepare in advance for all their students. This is why we are requesting a parent commitment selection by Monday, April 5, 2021 at 4 p.m. for next school year. The deadline has been extended. Please make your selection as soon as possible.

Similar to what parents were asked to do in September 2020, we are requesting a commitment be made in PowerSchool.

Directions for Making Your Parent Commitment Selection

STEP ONE:
Sign in to your PowerSchool account:
https://psweb.wssd.k12.pa.us/public/home.html
Please note, your selection can only be submitted on the PowerSchool website and cannot be reported through the PowerSchool App. If you need assistance creating a PowerSchool account, please contact your child's school.

STEP TWO:
Along the top, left-hand side of your screen, you will see “Parent Commitment” (it is the first button under Missing Assignments). Click on that button.

STEP THREE:
On the next screen you will see the options available to your child for their particular grade level. Make your selection by clicking on the dropdown.

STEP FOUR:
Once you have made your choice, click the blue “Submit” button to record your selection. You will see a green check mark and message which confirms your selection has been submitted. Parents have until Monday, April 5 at 4 p.m. to make changes. If you scroll down you will see the Commitment History. The top row is the most current commitment which will be used for next school year.

Parents must select an option for each of their children. If you have multiple children associated with your account, you can easily do this by selecting their name at the top of the screen.

THANK YOU

As we reflect on the year we experienced in the midst of the pandemic, I want to take this opportunity to share how grateful I am to each of you for your patience and support as we have navigated the challenges together. I look forward to operating on a more normal schedule next year and to continue our partnership in providing the best learning experience for our children.

Sincerely,
