Message to Families of Incoming Kindergarten Students

Message to Incoming Kindergarten Students and Their Families

March 18, 2021
Good evening future West Shore kindergarten families,
Thank you for registering your child for kindergarten and welcome to the West Shore family!
Today I am reaching out to let you know about the District's plans for next school year and to ask you to make a parent commitment for the fall.
Looking Ahead

For the 2021-2022 school year, it is our intent to follow a traditional schedule with students at all grade levels learning in person, five days. However, throughout this school year, we heard from families who are interested in a choice for on-line and blended learning. Based on this feedback and a desire to offer expanded learning options, we are excited to introduce a virtual learning academy to meet the needs of students and families who are seeking an alternative to the traditional in person school experience.  The Expanded Choices for e-Learners (ExCEL) Virtual Learning Academy will provide flexibility in the learning environment and will allow for a more diverse offering of courses for our students, including those in kindergarten through senior year of high school. The design of the Academy was based on feedback from students, parents, teachers, administration, and our experiences from this year.
As you will note by reviewing the information below, ExCEL will offer an enhanced experience from Distance Learning 2.0, including access to onsite programs. To learn more about what makes ExCEL unique, view sample schedules, and determine if it is right for your child, please visit:
Making Your Parent Commitment Selection

In order to properly staff and schedule all students for the upcoming school year, we need families to make a commitment to the learning option that is a best fit for their child and family.  The learning options for incoming kindergarten students are:
  • In-person five days a week
  • ExCEL Virtual Academy
As you can imagine, creating schedules that meet the different course needs of in-person and online students is very complex, and we want to be able to fulfill the requests of all students to the greatest extent possible while allowing our teachers to prepare in advance for all their students. This is why we are requesting a parent commitment selection by Monday, April 5, 2021 at 4 p.m. for next school year. The deadline has been extended. Please make your selection as soon as possible.
Please use the following Google form to register you selection:
Please note, if you have older children in the District, you will be receiving a separate email with directions on making your parent commitment for them in PowerSchool.  Parents  must select an option for each of their children.

As we reflect on the year we experienced in the midst of the pandemic, I want to take this opportunity to share how grateful I am that you have chosen the West Shore School District for your child. I look forward meeting you and to working with you to achieve our shared goal of providing the best learning experience for your child.
