Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The West Shore School District Board of School Directors, administration, and staff embrace a shared commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which supports our District pledge to provide students with inspiring and relevant experiences so they may live meaningful, purposeful, and impactful lives.

In addition to discussions which will naturally occur during social studies and history classes, the West Shore School District will be celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May.  We encourage our school community to join us in recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

  • Shared Stories: District Inclusive Literature Initiative (K-5) - District Elementary schools will receive grade-level specific books to be read to students during the month. Books were chosen not only based on their literary value, but the way in which they each highlight cultural and physical diversity in an age-appropriate way. Special thanks to the West Shore Foundation and CARES Act for funding the purchase of these award-winning titles for students. Click here to learn more.

  • Video Playlist – Mrs. Guistwhite, Cedar Cliff H.S. Librarian, created a playlist of videos in honor of AAPI. Click here to view.

  • 31 Ways to Celebrate in May and Beyond - Click here to learn 31 ways to celebrate the vibrant and diverse traditions and contributions of Asians and Asian Americans provided by Asia Society.org.

The West Shore School District is committed to providing an inclusive, equitable environment for all. Our efforts with Black History Month in February, Women's History Month in March, Diversity Month in April, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May are the first of many exciting initiatives we have planned.
