Welcome to Mrs. Manley's Home Page!

School Year 2011-2012 is here!

February 2012

Happy Year of the Dragon! We have celebrated by learning all about the significance of the dragon in Chinese folklore.

Biography study has also filled our time together.Every student is doing independent study of one or more famous people.

January 2012/December 2011
The big news in Special Interest is all about our new project using QR CODES. Please check out our book talks at:

We also forced narcissus bulbs as we learned all about the differences between bulb and seeds.

November 2011

Wow, we are on the move again! Our virtual field trip has taken us back to the Plymouth Plantation in 1621. We have debunked many of the myths surrounding the "First Thanksgiving". Also, we have compared the lives of the Pilgrims to those of the Wampanoag. Based upon their research and increased understanding, students decided which group they would rather have joined.

October 2011

We have immersed ourselves in a lush tropical rain forest of our own creation! From the youngest students in the program to the most "senior", research and exploration of the ecosystem and biodiversity of the rain forest has engaged the minds of my students. The website www.rainforest-alliance.org has been an outstanding resource for our classes. We have also read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry which offers a window into the dangers of deforestation.

September 2011

Our first cycle week is over and my students are GEARED UP to learn! Please ask them what that means...we have discussed it in class.

For parents, I am sending home 2 important notices with the children. The first is the list of the materials that the student needs to bring to class, in order to create the cover art for their writing journal. The second is an invitation to Gifted 24/7, a seminar specifically designed for parents of elementary children who have been identified as Gifted and who are currently participating in the West Shore School District Elementary Gifted Support Program. I will co-teach the seminar with Mrs. Miller, the Gifted Support Teacher for Hillside; Fairview; Rossmoyne/Lower Allen; and Fishing Creek.

We would love to see you there!

August 2011

I can't wait to get to see all of my students and hear about their summer activities.

I traveled to Europe with Mr. Manley and had an amazing time! Not only did I get to see real windmills; wooden shoes; tulips of every color; and real masterpieces painted by Van Gogh and Rembrandt; I also ate a variety of the best cheese I have ever tasted!

Can you guess where I went? If yes, tell me when you see me.

Looking forward to an awesome year!

Hugs,

Mrs. Manley
