Message from the Superintendent
Friday, January 5, 2018, schools in the West Shore School District will operate on a two-hour delay with modified kindergarten.
Given the number of buildings in our District, the distances our buses travel, and the number of students who walk to school each day, I feel the delayed start to the school day is in the best interest and safety of our students and staff.
The later start will allow our local municipalities time to address areas of drifting snow and ice. It will also give our transportation and maintenance teams time to ensure buses are ready to transport students and buildings are ready to warmly receive them. Rest assured we will assess conditions in the morning to ensure we can open and operate as expected.
While we strive to pick up students on time each day, some weather-related delays do occur. With this in mind, we strongly encourage families to review their emergency plans, so that in the event of an unexpected bus delay, children recognize under what circumstances and conditions you would expect them to return home or to the home of a trusted neighbor.
Deciding whether to delay or cancel school is among my most challenging responsibilities as superintendent. I trust a decision made this evening provides you and your family with additional time to make plans for tomorrow.
