Practicing Kindness

Kindness Counts

I will always say kind words.

Throughout the entire school year, we try to learn and practice how to be kind to everyone at Hillside. One special book we read is called Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. It is a special book to help the children learn to celebrate their own special name. The story also has a deeper meaning of to always say kind words to others because a wrinkled heart cannot be smoothed back out. While reading the story, I wrinkle the large red heart when classmates make fun of Chrysanthemum's name. Then when she gets home from school, her family tries to make her feel better so I try to smooth the heart out. At the end of the story, the children write their names on band-aides and then glue it to the heart. The heart is on display in our classroom all year long.
