Gifted Independent Study

Students in the gifted program may participate in Special Interest through the Independent Study elective. With the Independent Study course, students sign up on their course selection cards to take Special Interest as a class for a grade and a credit. Consequently, students meet once a day for 60 minute classes for the first or second semesters. Students may take the class as often as they like throughout their four years of high school.

Course Description-Available to students in the gifted program grades 9-12. Students may fulfill their G.I.E.P. goals and objectives by completing projects that match their strengths and interests. Projects may be selected by the students and may include, but are not limited to, entries for Scholastic Writing, preparation for Science Olympiad, entries for other competitions, immersion in a foreign language, enrichment in creative endeavors. preparation for SATs, ACTs and college applications.  Students will contract with the Special Interest teacher. The student will develop plans and keep a daily log of activities and accomplishments.  Bi-weekly reports are due to the Special Interest teacher.

-permits you to learn under the guidance of experts in the field, even if they are not members of the Red Land faculty

-promotes independent learning, self-monitoring and personal goal setting
