About Our School

The New Cumberland Middle School staff and students take pride in being a community school. We are committed to our motto which states "The New Cumberland Middle School learning community is dedicated to achieving high academic success while developing a sense of ownership in the pursuit of social responsibility, personal discipline, and academic excellence."

New Cumberland Middle School is located in the heart of the borough of New Cumberland. The school has served New Cumberland borough, DDRE, and the surrounding area for over 85 years. New Cumberland Middle School provides a quality education to approximately 640 students in grades 6 through 8.

In comparison to the other two middle schools in West Shore, New Cumberland Middle School enjoys an intimate neighborhood feeling. As a result, NCMS has been fortunate to have substantial parent involvement and is able to build strong partnerships with the communities it serves. The faculty, staff, and administration are committed to continuing to provide excellence in education and promote responsibility to its communities which is the hallmark of the West Shore School District and New Cumberland Middle School.

Students are constantly engaged in a wide range of programs. In addition to the traditional courses, students have opportunities to receive instruction in technology education, physical education, health, music, art, family & consumer science, band, chorus, and orchestra. Students who exceed expectations in Language Arts are given the opportunity to enroll in honor level classes each year. All eighth graders are enrolled in Algebra classes so the sixth and seventh grade math programs are designed to build within each student the skills necessary to ensure success in the eighth grade. Students needing remediation due to non-proficiency on state assessments are provided classes to strengthen identified areas of weakness. New Cumberland teachers effectively use data to identify areas of weakness and to provide meaningful instruction to our students. Programs which extend beyond the curriculum include: Girl's on the Run, ECOs (Extra-Curricular Opportunities), Make a Difference Club, stage crew, musical, and student council.

The school has undergone four renovations since it was constructed in 1928. The most recent upgrades were made to the auditorium, gymnasium, technology education area, and our two computer labs. Additionally, the entire building is networked and has wireless access throughout. Each teacher is provided a laptop computer for his/her professional use. Mobile computer labs and interactive whiteboards are consistently utilized by the teachers to increase instructional effectiveness and to promote 21st century skills necessary to be successful in today’s world.
